We have all read or heard about the disaster that struck Moore, Oklahoma. It makes you aware of how Doctors & Nurses make such a difference in times of disaster. We are fortunate here in the United States to have access to so many top-notch, highly qualified Doctors, Nurses and Healthcare facilities. Yes, there were many lives loss in this natural disaster, however there are so many lives that was saved due to the Doctors, Nurses, and Emergency Personnel who are on the scene or in the hospitals moments after disaster strikes. MSS owners, are both Registered Nurses and have years of experience in the medical industry. So we understand firsthand, the responsibilities and life-changing situations a nurse goes through. Nurses have continuously shown to be reliable responders, and their compassionate nature typically compels them to respond to those in need, even when it puts their own safety or well-being at risk. Many have asked how they can help during these times of disasters. For Nurses, the American Nurses Association advocates that the best thing you can do is to register with a government’s or non-governmental organization’s (NGO) disaster volunteer registry. These registries are part of the larger response system, and enables responders to know exactly which volunteers to deploy based on the needs of the situation. Volunteers that are part of a registry have specialized training for their roles in disaster medical care, and understand the specialized incident command structure that disaster response agencies employ. For others, make sure you have a personal and family disaster plan in place. Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected by this disaster. For information on how to help those residents of Moore, Oklahoma contact the American Red Cross. Reference: American Nursing Association

The post Nurses and Healthcare associates make a difference… appeared first on Medical Staffing Solutions.

Employee Spotlight Georgia Rader’s, MSS Travel Nurse, most recent experience has been working in cardiac units. It has been her job to make sure that one of the most vital organs we have is functioning properly. Georgia’s prior experience as a CNA has showed her the importance of getting know who you are caring for and her attention to the details of the patients she is caring for make her the rock star nurse she is. And the proof is in the tapioca pudding… One of Georgia’s patients wrote a card to the St. Mary’s Medical Center unit. This is what the card said: Received 3/20/13 “This March marks the anniversary of what might have been my death but because of nurse named Georgia I am alive and still going. I have no recollection of the events of that day but my daughter told me that a nurse named Georgia fought so hard to save me. I am sure she won’t remember me but I will forever remember what she did for me. I got a reaction to the dye used when putting stents in a heart. My kidneys and all else shut down. I also bled out from the insertion site and needed blood, the doctor walked out but she made sure I got what was needed; she did not give up on me. Nurses take an oath as do doctors, she fought for her patient’s life. We may never see each other again, Georgia, but please know I am proud of you, the nurse you are, the person you are. You will always be in my daily prayers, thank you. I also wish to thank everyone else there for helping me, I know I am a difficult person to care for.”

The post Spotlight: Georgia Rader appeared first on Medical Staffing Solutions.

The last time we heard from MSS Travel Nurse, Laura Hlohinec, she was on an assignment with us in Hawaii. She was working hard to put three boys, from the Dominican Republic, through college and to get them healthy. For more background on Laura’s story, click here. UPDATE Laura went to the Dominican Republic visit the boys to have a small reunion. All three boys are well into their first year of college; one has chosen to study accounting, another law, and the third boy is deciding between chemical engineering or accounting. They all seem to have clean bill of health too. Laura reported that one of the boys has been TB free for a year now and his family is doing well too. While on her reunion trip, Laura took a nine hour bus ride to cross the border into Haiti. Laura is working with an organization called Ti Kay which provides free TB treatment for in- or outpatients. Laura spends her days working with TB and AIDS patients to get them to a point where they are able to return home. She works on getting her patients to eat and walk to gain their strength back. She said that the Ti Kay organization provides all the treatment for free but have very little funding. Oxygen is the biggest expense and the most needed. Laura reminds us that nurses are needed more and more every day. Choosing a nursing career can help to expand your community and international reach. As a nurse, you will have opportunities to help other in your neighborhood or across the oceans. There is never a shortage of those who need help getting healthier. And there is never a shortage of those who can help others. Laura has accepted these boys from the Dominican Republic into her life and has made it a goal to give them a chance at an education and a healthier life. Laura is still funding the boys’ education out of her own pocket. She is still accepting donations to help with tuition cost and living cost. If you would like to help Laura, you can go to her Pay Pal account. Read about a New York doctor and the impact the letter he wrote to the family members of patient he had cared for. This story was found on MSN.com (For the story, click here) NEW YORK – Big city emergency rooms can be chaotic, overwhelming and painful places. When life’s unfortunate twists land you in one, the experience can be cold and impersonal. So when an emergency room doctor from New York-Presbyterian Hospital wrote a heartfelt letter to a man whose wide had just died at the hospital, millions took notice and the letter soon went viral. The letter, which has been viewed by over 2 million people, was posted by the deceased woman’s son to the social network site Reddit and can be seen here. It reads: Dear Mr. (removed), I am the Emergency Medicine physician who treated your wife Mrs (removed) last Sunday in the Emergency Department at (hospital). I learned only yesterday about her passing away and wanted to write to you to express my sadness. In my twenty years as a doctor in the Emergency Room, I have never written to a patient or a family member, as our encounters are typically hurried and do not always allow for more personal interaction. However, in your case, I felt a special connection to your wide (removed), who was so engaging and cheerful in spite of her illness and trouble breathing. I was also touched by the fact that you seemed to be a very loving couple. You were highly supportive of her, asking the right questions with calm, care and concern. From my experience as a physician, I find that the love and support of a spouse or a family member is the most soothing gift, bringing peace and serenity to those critically ill. I am sorry for your loss and I hope you can find comfort in the memory of your wife’s great spirit and of your loving bond. My heartfelt condolences go out to you and your family. (removed), MD The 24-year-old son who posted the letter said in an email interview with the Huffington Post that the outpouring of support from Reddit users has helped him cope with the passing of his mother. In fact, he posted the letter to the site with the header “This letter from my late mother’s doctor has changed my life.” He told Huffington Post that he was helped not only by the doctor’s sentiments, but the outpouring of sympathy it evoked from others. “The support I got from Reddit was amazing – doctors, nurses and other Redditors who have lost their mothers to cancer were all shocked and amazed that the doctor took the time to write such a heartfelt, meaningful letter,” he said. While New York-Presbyterian Hospital confirmed the incident did happen, it declined to identify the doctor, saying he or she preferred to remain anonymous.

The post BYOK (Bring Your Own Kleenex) appeared first on Medical Staffing Solutions.

Spreading bacteria can stop at the sink Everyone knows the importance of washing your hands but now it has become vital. Spreading throughout the newspapers are stories about a super bacteria that is infecting patients in nursing homes and LTAC facilities. What makes this bacteria so “super” is its resistance to antibiotics and the Center for Disease Control is having a hard time investing in a treatment because the bacteria adapts quickly to resistance. The bacteria is being spread through contaminated medical equipment and person-to-person contact. Therefore, washing your hands has become extremely important. So if you are visiting someone or working in a nursing home or a LTAC facility or, please wash your hands or use hand sanitizer. The goal is find a treatment but to also keep the bacteria from spreading to the outside community. What is the right way to wash your hands?* Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold) and apply soap. Rub your hands together to make a lather and scrub them well; be sure to scrub the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails. Continue rubbing your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the “Happy Birthday” song from beginning to end twice. Rinse your hands well under running water. Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them. *From the CDC website: http://www.cdc.gov/handwashing/ For more information and a more in depth story, see the link below. “(CBS News) Can anything stop the SUPERBUGS that are making people sick and seem to defy the tools of medical science? Researchers are working on the problem, but to no avail so far.
So if you are visiting someone or working in a nursing home or a LTAC facility or, please wash your hands or use hand sanitizer. The goal is find a treatment but to also keep the bacteria from spreading to the outside community.

What is the right way to wash your hands?*

Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold) and apply soap.

Spotlight: Laura Hlohinec At Medical Staffing Solutions we have more than just great medical staff; we have great staff that does great things in the world, one person in particular, Laura Hlohinec. Laura is on assignment with us in Hawaii but when she is not working for us, she is working hard to make the lives of three boys in the Dominican Republic better. She has been going to the Dominican Republic for over 12 years now. She started off by volunteering at an all-boys orphanage with an organization from the United States. But due to conflict, the orphanage closed down and Laura spent her time tracking down the boys from the orphanage. Laura found three of the boys from that orphanage hiding out at another orphanage and she has kept in close contact with them since that initial trip. The boys have since graduated from high school; Laura was even able to participate in their high school graduation by walking them down the aisle as their “godmother”. Laura says that all the boys have been raised well and have good principles and work ethic. Laura does not see these boys as people she is supporting, she sees them a family and she is committed to helping out her family. And her boys are off to college. In the past month, the boys have all enrolled at the local university and have started taking classes. Laura has been supporting the boys and their education on her on. She raises money to pay for their tuition. The boys do maintain a part time job but most of their money earned goes towards their living expenses and little is left to spend on the extras needed for college. Laura is a great example of how a little support and great compassion can go a long way. Her dedication to helping her Dominican Republic family has led to a successful story of three boys making it to college.

By Eileen Williamson, RN, MSN Accountability is responsibility truly understood. Be a mentor always and a protégé often. Commit yourself to being fully committed.
